Anecdote-a-Day Archives

September 25th, 2008

If one doesn't remove themselves from their present environment to receive feedback, then they will never fully understand how revered or disasterous their work really is.

Take for example the stay-at-home entrepreneur who sits on their computer doing, for the sake of argument, virtual administrative assistance to clientelle from all over the world.

Since they rest inside nor do not need to go out and mingle personally as most of their clients are a wee further than a short little commute down the street, venturing outside won't solve much in the way of feedback. Yet that can pose a problem in and of itself too.

People are prone to hearing what others have to say (unless in the rare extreme they are capable of holding a high degree of self-sufficiency that they know the ins and outs of what their work looks like). If they do not hear essentially what others have to say, they could operate under the false assumption that their present works are just not good enough, and risk changing something that doesn't need to be changed at all.

This is why there's such a high criticism of management and leaders as they tend to sit high in their towers completely unaware of what the general reaction or impression is of what they are trying to accomplish.

When someone comes down to earth, so to speak, and mingles with those who ultimately determine the quality of any piece, regardless of scope, the chances of them remaining with a specific design, story or idea are greater with the opportunity to apply relevant changes to improve said design, story or idea.

Case in point: if the stay-at-home virtual administrative assistant doesn't mingle in online forums to discuss or view what people are saying on blogs, they will have no clue (again, unless they have a strong sense of self-sufficiency) as to the perception of what it is they do.

So shake off the shackles that hold you to your desk or profession and get out there! You'd be amazed to find out that all your fretting is merely just the result of anxiety and perfectionist propaganda.
