Out of the things that occur
within an organization, communication is the most neglected of them
all.
What gets said by one person
is misinterpreted or countered by another, and the message gets miscommunicated
throughout the organization; most of the time it comes from those in
higher positions within the company. When one hand cannot clearly communicate
to the other, then there's a definite communication issue at hand. No
pun intended, of course.
Communication is like the
aerial blood that keeps the organization's life pumping through its
many veins and channels. It is what contains the secret codes, stories
and mannerisms that make it unique and give it that special edge over
other organizations. When the communication circulation becomes jammed
or clogged, suddenly the company's body is not functioning properly.
Its performance begins to
wobble off course and hit bumps that it should have noticed and avoided.
One would think that those
in the higher positions would have greater caution and practice more
care over the messages they send through the corporate communication
network. No two people are on the same page and rumourmongering runs
abound, distorting and essentially destroying the company's fabric.
The means by which the message
is sent determines how it will be received and understood. E-mail and
memos are the most ineffective manner by which to convey messages that
hold any emotion or some sort of dire relevance, as the written word
is hard to gauge tone and causality.
Perhaps that right there
is the problem: lack of emotion and passion in the messages we send
out in our organizations. We're so hellbent on profits and productivity
that we've forgotten the basic fundamental that there are people who
help comprise 90% of the organization and solidify its existence.
When we move away from the
grey, concrete and corporate lifelessness do we really begin to experience
a shift towards a greener, livelier and more involved institution.
Try and initiate cleaner
corporate communication simply by enriching the means by which you communicate
with one another. After a short while you'll begin to notice that everyone
is connected simultaneously and there is no broken wire to blame for
the wrong information.
